Estudo das trajetórias de ciclones extratropicais formados na região da Península Antártica durante a primavera

Resumo
O oceano é cada vez mais visto como um componente vital do sistema climático. Através da superfície oceânica ocorrem trocas com a atmosfera de grandes quantidades de calor, água, gases, partículas. Os ciclones extratropicais (CE) atuam na transferência de momentum devido ao atrito do vento nas camadas superficiais do oceano, além de distribuírem calor e umidade das baixas para as altas latitudes. Esses sistemas têm um papel primordial na interação oceano-atmosfera e no clima da América do Sul. No Hemisfério Sul, a área entre o sul do Brasil e a Península Antártica (PA) (30° S a 70° S) é descrita como uma das mais favoráveis para a formação de ciclones devido à existência de fortes contrastes de temperatura entre o oceano e a camada de ar em superfície e também instabilidades baroclínicas pré existentes. Este estudo está associado ao Projeto ATMOS (AnTarctic Modeling Observation System) e buscou compreender a interação entre ciclones e oceano na região entre as altas e médias latitudes austrais. O objetivo foi rastrear as trajetórias dos CE que se formam ao redor da PA nos meses de primavera, a fim de estudar as propriedades estatísticas e verificar possíveis influências em latitudes mais baixas. O algoritmo encontrou algumas trajetórias anômalas e pouca correlação da vorticidade com as variáveis oceânicas. Tal fato pode ser indicativo da necessidade de usar técnicas estatísticas não-lineares.
